Dr. Bong Jae Chung became my calculus I professor in the Spring of 2019. He was a wonderful instructor who always helped me anytime I needed it. I stopped by his office more than twice per week for assistance, and he one day asked me to join his research project. I happily accepted and fast forward to 2021, Dr. Chung and I had plans to produce meaningful results. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I will always remember Dr. Chung for his kindness, generosity, helpfulness, and intelligence. Sending hugs and love to all of his family and friends.

My Dear Chung
You and I have been great friends for nearly 24 years. What great times we've had together in Pittsburgh, Chapel Hill and New Jersey. We studied together, graduated together, did our postdocs together, traveled together, worked together and partied together. You are a part of so many good memories in my life and were there to listen and help me during tough times. I have learned more from watching and listening to you than you will ever know. I deeply value your simplicity, your kindness and commitment to your friends. I still remember that you agreed to drive with me all the way to Tallahassee (FL) - a 16 hour drive- just to help me get settled in 2005; what a great trip! Our summer in Berkeley in 2001 was so amazing and memorable. They are all deeply etched in memory.
Every paper we wrote together, every discussion and brainstorming session we had was filled with excitement and possibilities. We are on the cusp of so many more great projects together. I will miss not having you around to complete them.
We talked about traveling together to your hometown (Daegu) some day. I will definitely try to make that trip some day. Until we meet in person again, I will see you in the stars when I go camping (which you loved), in the projects that we began together, in the food that I enjoyed eating with you...in all the simple things in life.
You have made the lives of everyone you came in touch with better.
Rest in peace my brother.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I had the great pleasure of having Bong Jae as part of my group here at George Mason University for several years, and sharing many great moments. I will always remember Bong Jae's great attitude, always smiling, never scared of tackling new problems, no matter how difficult or demanding. Bong Jae was a very smart person and at the same time very humble, always ready to help anybody with anything, and especially students. He touched all our lives. We will always remember Bong Jae as a happy and kind person. We will miss him a lot.

I had the pleasure of having Dr. Chung as my professor last semester. He was extremely accommodating and considerate to students. He would devote time to explain hard concepts, and gave us a chance to succeed during these difficult times. He was truly one of the kindest professors I’ve met all throughout college. I send my deepest condolences, and want to say that us students are forever grateful for his kind spirit.

Please accept my sympathy for the passing of Dr. Bong Jae Chung. As his student during this day and age, I never had the privilege of meeting him in person. From our conversations, both in class and regarding my research for which he was my advisor, I always felt reassured when I was uncertain of the subject and gently guided by Dr. Chung. I know that his whole-hearted dedication to his work is something that as a student I can only aspire to reach. He never hesitated to meet with me, out of his own free time, to ensure my understanding of coursework. He devoted his life to education, and to have been a part of his life is in itself an enduring lesson of patience and persistence. His voice was kind and humble and his mind guided by knowledge and goodwill. There is little for me to say to express my gratitude in working with him. The invaluable lessons he sowed in the minds of his students are a living testament of his steadfast commitment to the profession which he so loved. -Brandon Martinez.

Dear Members of Bong Jae's Family,
I was fortunate to know Bong Jae as his doctoral thesis advisor at the University of Pittsburgh. It was truly a pleasure to be his advisor and get to know him as a person and an academician. I first met him in the early stages of his graduate studies as a member of his Masters’ thesis committee led by his advisor, Dr. Charlie Hwang. I was very impressed by Bong Jae and, with Dr. Hwang's agreement, recruited him to my research group for his doctoral studies. One of the things that stood out to me was his great love of learning and discovery. He was clever, determined and ready to try new and difficult topics. His doctoral research was on challenging topics involving theoretical and computational studies of brain aneurysms. We will miss him so greatly but he will always be in our hearts.
I am posting some pictures from a few of our academic meetings as well as from Bong Jae's doctoral graduation. Bong Jae, Ashwin and Doni all graduated with their doctoral degrees during the same year- 2004. In-Soon, I know you remember this special graduation moment as well as the trip to Naples for a conference in Capo Miseno, Italy. You will see the picture of Bong Jae with Hasballah Zakaria and Peggy Meinhart from that meeting. You were so brave and went off exploring on your own without knowing any Italian, though forgetting to bring the address of the hotel! That did not prevent you from enjoying the day, and eventually, you called our department back in the U.S. to find exactly where our hotel was so you could rejoin us for dinner. Some staff managed to find the number (we still don't know how) and reached us through the hotel manager up in the hills above Naples and conveyed the hotel address. When your dear husband was notified that you were down in Naples and would be rejoining us soon, he just smiled calmly and laughed a little and told us that you always knew how to make your way in every city. We were all so concerned, but he never doubted for a moment that you would find a solution.
I have also included a more recent picture from a conference dinner with Xinjie Duan, Juan Cebral, Bong Jae and myself. There are several other pictures from a meeting in Heidelberg, Germany as well as one from a dinner in Ashwin and Poonam's home.
Know that we will all treasure our memories of Bong Jae and share your grief. He has left a beautiful mark on all of us.
Sincerely, Anne

I'm so sorry to hear of Bong's passing and wish my sincerest condolences to his family. In addition to his accomplishments as a scholar, he was such a genuinely nice and open person. We were in the same cohort of new faculty to join Montclair State University and I remember his friendliness and curiosity, asking about my work and family.
