Obituary of Paul Robert Horvath
Paul Robert Horvath entered into eternal rest on the morning of September 22, 2023.
Paul was born in Kulpmont, PA on November 1, 1932. Paul attended Kulpmont High School where he was a 2-sport athlete: football and basketball. He married his high school sweetheart Anna Savina on February 7, 1953, right before moving to NJ. Both Paul and Anna worked in his parents' restaurant, the Valley Sweet Shop, in Lyndhurst, NJ. In March of that same year, Paul was drafted into the Army where he spent 2 years. Upon returning he became a member of the Army Reserves.
While in Lyndhurst, Paul joined the Lyndhurst Ambulance Squad in 1958 and then joined the Lyndhurst Fire Department in 1960. He gained experience and knowledge within the fire department and eventually was elected to the position of 2nd Asst Chief in 1978, 1st Asst Chief in 1979 and Chief in 1980. While chief, Mr. Horvath was honored to have President Jimmy Carter stop by the Lyndhurst Fire Dept. while he was campaigning for the Presidency of the United States, which he eventually won.
Paul was also a member in good standing continuously for 53 years of the American Legion Post 139 and the Knights of Columbus.
As Paul donated his time to the Lyndhurst Ambulance Squad, he also began working for Leslie Company in Lyndhurst. He eventually rose to the position of Quality Control Supervisor in charge of both Shipping and Receiving. As luck would have it, Leslie Co. decided to relocate to Tampa, FL in 1986 and Paul and Anna decided to move with the company. Paul and Anna settled into a wonderful golf community and spent the next 36 years in Florida playing golf 3 days a week. As time moved on and age crept in, Paul began to show the effects of Dementia, so moving back to Lyndhurst closer to family seemed the best idea. Paul and Anna relocated back to Lyndhurst in 2019.
Paul spent the last year of his life being Lovingly cared for by his wife, children, and grandchildren. A special thanks to all the people who helped care for Paul at Harmony Village in Paramus.
Paul is survived by his wife Anna (Savina) of 70 years. His children, Paul, David, John and his wife Theresa, Marianne and her husband James Griffith. His grandchildren, Brianna, Kerri, Allison, Tyler (TJ), Samantha, and Emily Griffith.
