Obituary of Harry W. Robinson
Robinson, Harry W., 101, died on Monday, October 23, 2023. Mr. Robinson was born in Hoboken, raised in Jersey City and Union City, and moved to Lyndhurst in 1974 where he was a resident for almost 50 years. Harry was a state champion gymnast in high school in the 1930's. He competed in gym meets held at Annapolis and West Point. He won three medals in the 1939 New Jersey State Championship meet (a gold for tumbling, a silver for horizontal bar and a bronze for long horse) - the most medals earned that day by any gymnast. Harry proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Ranger (CV-4) from January 1943 through January 1946. His rank was Electrician Mate, 2nd Class. He saw action near the port of Bodo, Norway, where the USS Ranger bombed German shipping traffic and he earned three medals, Pacific Campaign, Atlantic Campaign and Asiatic Campaign. After the war, he attended the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa on the GI BIll from 1949-1952. He was licensed as a chiropractor and in 1967, he became a welder for PSE&G, until he retired in 1987. His favorite pastime was listening to 1940's big bands jazz. His knowledge of music was as extensive as his record collection. Harry also penned lyrics to his favorite Jackie Gleason instrumentals for his wife and children. Harry is predeceased by his beloved wife, Nellie D. Robinson (nee Ruggiero) in 2017 and is survived by his loving children, Richard Robinson and his wife, Priscilla, Eileen West and her husband, Stephen, and Kathy Robinson as well as his cherished grandchildren, Christopher Manoni, Sarah Jane Telesca, and Mark Robinson, and by his adored great grandchildren, Jason Noah Manoni, Alison Angelina Manoni, Aurora Telesca, and Stella Telesca. Harry is also survived by his brother, Richie Robinson, and his sister, Loretta and many nieces and nephews.
