A man of few words with the biggest smile, there was no one that truly cared about the people they loved as deeply as you. You were always so proud of me, even in some of your last days, you were asking about my plans for after high school and holding my hand while we watched a show together.
There is no one I would’ve rather sat on that couch with and talked about anything. I will miss you most on the days I hope to make you the most proud. I am beyond grateful for having someone as caring as you in my life. You always made sure I knew how beautiful I was, how much you cared, how interested you were in anything and everything I had to say.

I have only the best memories associated with visiting Pop-Pop. Just warm smiles, big hugs, and great laughs and conversation. I love you forever and I’m grateful for every minute I had with you. You were always genuinely interested in everything I had to say and tried to find connections to things I liked so we could talk about them. I will always appreciate everything you were. You fought so hard and showed us all how strong we already knew you were. Thank you for always being a light in all of our lives, we’ll miss you forever.

There are not adequate words to describe how much you mean to me. I can not think of a day in my life where I came downstairs and you were not sitting in your seat ready to talk to me about the latest shows on Netflix or my historical inquiries. From letting me put an entire cup of barrettes in your hair, to watching Ghost Whisperer or Chuck, to our backyard pinochle and pool games. You modeled what it means to be humble, kind, have strength, and constantly believe in oneself. You are my person and I will forever be grateful for the lessons I was able to learn from you. I will truly miss you forever but I promise to continue striving to make you proud. I like to think you are up there in the mountains with an ice cold beer, playing cards. Wherever you are, I know you have the best seat in the house to watch over us all. I love you pop, rest easy now.

Despite what some people may think, I have never considered myself unlucky for only having one grandfather. There was never any room in my heart for another grandfather; you were more than capable of taking up the space that may have been designated for two.
An unknown author once said, “a grandfather is someone with silver in his hair, and gold in his heart.” This sentiment could not possibly ring more true for the man you will always be in my eyes. From the belly laughs you elicited while chasing us around the pool making seal noises, to the knowing winks you sent across heated pinochle tables, to simply sharing one of our conversations over a glass of great wine, you have gifted us with countless memories that, for now, will have to fill the void your departure has left in each of our lives. You were a role model for us all; an emblem for kindness and compassion, integrity and intelligence, humor and humility. I will never cease to miss you or your presence in my life.
The first lesson you ever taught me was the difference between an “Ameri-CAN” and an “Ameri-CAN’T.” It seemed completely ludicrous at the time, but I now understand this lesson for what it was: in your eyes, there was absolutely no limit to what I was capable of. I hold your words close in times of doubt, and will continue to for the rest of my life. You taught me to believe in myself, and that is invaluable. I carry that lesson in my heart, for it is the piece of you I will always have with me.
I found a poem recently that encompasses the emotions I have experienced since you left, so I will leave you with this final message: “Think of him still as the same, I say, he is not dead - he is just away.” Until we meet again - I love you, Pop.

Dad, my very first memory is swinging in the park with you pushing me back and forth. I must have been 3 years old. I remember you smelled of Irish Spring and I was laughing so hard. What I remember most is feeling so happy, so safe, and so very loved. That was how you always made me feel. Thank you for being the best Dad and Grandpa that anyone could ever imagine. Sometimes Dennis and I could be like oil and water but never in a bad way. It almost became an expected routine whenever we met. Pat and I shared a special time in our teenage years. Even then I knew she and Dennis shared a special relationship. My heart breaks for Pat and her family. RIP Dennis.
