A Eulogy for Our Mother, Irmgard Tylenda – by Michelle Driscoll
We count ourselves as blessed to have had such a beautiful human being in our lives for so long.
Those who knew her well know exactly what her reaction to our sadness of this terrible loss would be.
We would imagine that it would be something like this… She would go on to say ”I know that you think that the worst has happened. I’m not going to say don’t be sad, just don’t be sad for long. “Life is too short and you need to make the most of it during the time that you have on this Earth and I was lucky to have had a lot of it.”
Our mom was a true survivor. She never dwelled on the past or became angry or bitter about all the tragedy and adversity that she had to face and overcome throughout her life. “Shake it Off” is what she was known to say and that is exactly how she lived
.
As many of you may know, this is a woman who did not have an easy life by any means. What she did have though, was a life full of being loved and respected by all who knew her or came in contact with her. She always looked for a way to make someone else’s life better or easier, even though hers always was not.
During her lifetime, she survived living through the War in Germany as a young child, taking care of a bedridden husband for over a decade, burying her spouse of over 40 years, surviving the loss of children, grandchildren and so many other close friends and family members. Through it all until the end of her life, she never lost her faith and overcame it all with dignity and grace.
One of her favorite statements to make about our family is “Don’t Mistake Our Kindness for Weakness” those words were truest for Irma, On the surface, she appeared to be a kind and gentle soul, which was true, but, from the outside, you could never tell that she had an unyielding courage that her family and friends could count on. She had undeniable strength to overcome and survive many difficulties or misfortunes.
Even in the most tragic of situations, she continually looked for something positive to come out of it.
She taught her children to pull together and function as a close family unit, which in her mind was enough to get us through whatever came our way and was what se was most proud of.
The way she lived her life and behaved was truly inspiring. She was completely selfless, full of compassion patience and an immeasurable amount of love. She always gave of herself and gave far more than she ever took which she felt, was the right thing to do. Her kindness was infectious and she always made you feel better, no matter what.
There is a saying that goes “It takes a special kind of person to care enough to take the time for others….Someone who knows that “giving makes living a pleasure” and that gentleness is just another word for strength” and that, our dear friends and family, perfectly sums up who our mother was and the way that our mother lived.

Being childhood friends with her granddaughter, Irma was family to me. She always treated me like one of her own, and her door was always open to me. She will forever be missed, and will forever be loved.

My mom, Helen Kmeck, always spoke kind words of Irma. They chatted about their lives at Capricorn Beauty Salon. I heard about her feeding the birds in her yard, her job at Queen of Peace, a statute of some sort on her lawn, lol. I remember her always ending with "nice lady". I hope you and my mom have a good beautician up in Heaven. RIP nice lady.
